A brief history of Venture Drilling Supply by a founding member, and Executive Manager, Michele McCarthy.

As she began to write bits and pieces of Venture Drilling Supply’s history, she marveled at the changes and progress that has taken place in the last 43 years.

It wouldn’t be right to tell about VDS without mentioning where it all began in 1977. The concept of Venture Drilling Inc. ,VDI, was formed by two McCarthy brothers and a close friend discussing drilling strategy and what skills they could each benefit to a business.

Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained was literally how VDI got its name.

For more on VDI’s history, see the Former Atlas Copco “Deep Hole Drillers” second publication in 2007.

Venture Drilling Supply was formed in 1984, originally out of necessity to keep VDI running with minimum downtime. Supplying VDI’s 25 drills with consumables, parts and service turned out to be the perfect fit. Our first order was four hammers and two dozen bits.  As VDS grew, we saw the need to provide professional sales and service in Oklahoma and neighboring states.

It’s a company built by drillers for drillers.

We have always believed that the supply business benefits greatly from the knowledge of the drilling company.

We know what it means to be stuck in the hole…and that time is money.

When owner and founder Wayne McCarthy was tragically killed in a stock car racing accident in 1994, Michele went into auto pilot, focusing her energy on the Drilling Company and three small children: Colt (12), Nocona (11), and Ace (3). Wayne had always told her the supply company would not survive without him but drilling would always make the family a living. For three years, she tried her best to get a handle on the drilling business. Around 1998, she had decided it was time to invest extra monies into the supply company and give it support to grow.

Ingersol Rand Drilling Solutions took notice of VDS and its dedication to the market and eventually signed VDS to be a distributor for water well and oil/gas drilling rigs. Ingersol Rand Drilling Solutions, later was purchased by Atlas Copco, and now currently Epiroc. Dramatic growth over the past 36 years has allowed Venture Drilling Supply to become an industry leader for sales of some of the most recognized products in the drilling business.

Today, VDS supports a broad multi-industry customer base with over 300 family owned businesses and some 70 corporate accounts across the Mid and South West.
